General Motors and Honda have a deal to share vehicle platforms and technology in North America starting next year.

On Thursday the automakers said they have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to establish a North American automotive alliance. The deal has come together after extensive discussions.

The proposed alliance will include sharing a range of vehicles, to be sold under each company’s distinct brands, as well as cooperation in purchasing, research and development, and connected services.

Honda and GM plan to collaborate on purchasing supplies by leveraging their scale to gain costs savings. Purchasing collaboration would focus on joint sourcing of materials, logistics and localization strategies, GM said.

The alliance will help GM and Honda achieve substantial cost savings, and allow them to continue to invest in developing future products.

“This alliance will help both companies accelerate investment in future mobility innovation by freeing up additional resources,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “Given our strong track record of collaboration, the companies would realize significant synergies in the development of today’s vehicle portfolio.”

Birth of a deal

Reuss said GM and Honda will work “immediately toward completing definitive agreements and will have more details to share regarding financial benefits once those agreements are finalized.”

A Los Angeles Honda specialist stumbled upon this 1967 N600 wearing VIN #001, and now it's headed for the Honda museum.

Honda's start in the U.S. was rather inauspicious. With the 1973 fuel crisis was still a few years in the future and big cars with big V8s ruling the road, this diminutive 1967 Honda N600 was an odd duck in America. But now, the first Honda to ever reach U.S. shores is being lovingly restored, as documented in a video series called Serial One.

Los Angeles Honda mechanic Tim Mings bought this little green Honda without realizing its provenance. After a few years, Mings cleaned the car off, only to discover that it wears VIN #001-the very first N600 ever assembled. Mings says he's restored more than 1000 examples of this model over the last 20 years, so he's more than up to the task to restore this particular car.

Of the first 50 N600s Honda built in 1967, just three, including this one, survive. It was brought to the U.S. in 1969 and served as a test vehicle before sitting stagnant for years. When Mings' restoration is finished, the car will live in Honda's U.S. museum.
