If EPA-rated fuel economy is your only deciding factor and you won’t consider the more efficient Toyota Prius hatchback, start and finish your search with the 2017 Accord Hybrid. Nothing beats the Honda in this field, with the car’s anticipated 49/47 mpg city/highway above all other midsize hybrid sedan players. The 2017 Fusion Hybrid is good for 43/41 mpg, the Sonata Hybrid comes in at 38-39/43-45 mpg, and the Camry Hybrid gets 40-42/37-38 mpg.

Honda’s Accord, the car that more than any other model identified Japan as the force to be reckoned with in the U.S., is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. While many Kirins surely were tipped toasting the 12.7 million Accords that have been sold here—not to mention the 30 Car and Driver 10Best trophies the car has earned—Honda didn’t secure its place in the world’s most competitive market by dwelling on the past. The Japanese automaker ruthlessly identified and attacked its next goal, in this instance a 50-mpg hybrid to crown the ninth-generation Accord range.

Return of the Hybrid

The 2017 Accord hybrid is a key step in Honda’s move to electrified vehicles with an expanding range of hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel-cell models, and battery electrics. By 2030, Honda hopes two-thirds of its global fleet will be electrified, come what may in fuel prices, government edicts, and customer whims.

Toward that end, the new 2017 Accord hybrid we recently drove in Napa Valley, California, embodies comprehensive improvements over the previous Accord hybrid that Honda built and sold here in modest volumes in 2014 and 2015.

The Valley’s summer heat can cause all kinds of problems, and certain car safety features are the latest casualty. Safety is always top of mind for insurance business owner Jayson Hoffer.

“I've almost died twice; 15 years ago when an 89-year-old man pulled out in front of me there was nothing I could do,” said Hoffer. “Ever since I've had back pain and headaches so I want the safest car I could be in.”

Hoffer said he chose his 2015 Honda Accord for two key protection features. He pays $100 extra per month for the upgraded Accord with its forward collision and lane departure warning systems. But the system takes an early exit when it's too hot.

“It's not going off.  It should be beeping at me saying get back in your own lane,” said Hoffer, pointing to a flashing light on the dash warning that the forward collision and lane departure system is disengaged.
